Six decades later, and after several generations of the Bird family, we’re still here and still a favourite for people looking for leading furniture and carpet brands, style, quality and value.

For us it’s quite simply all about family and home.

Throughout 2017, we’ll be celebrating in lots of exciting ways – competitions, special discounts and plenty of fun on our website and via social media.

Bolton-le-Sands is referred to as Bodeltone in the Domesday book.

The somewhat unusual name of the village might lead you to believe that it’s a Norman name, but that’s not the case. In fact, it originates from the Old English words “bothl”, meaning “dwelling”, and “tun”, meaning manor, farm, village or hamlet.

In William the Conqueror’s famous survey of the nation, completed in 1086, the village was named as “Bodeltone”; at that time it was listed as having four “carucates” of taxable land – a carucate being the area of land that could be tilled with an 8-ox plough in a year. Over the centuries, it was also named as Botheltun, Bouelton, and Boulton; by 1265 it was generally known as Bolton.

However, as there were at least two other Boltons in Lancashire, there was a need to identify them apart from each other. The locals looked towards the most stunning feature of the area – the sands. In a will written in 1592, the writer refers to his home in “Bolton by the Sandes” and this was the most commonly used name for centuries. More interesting variations included the Latin-inspired Bolton in Sabulis, Bolton super Arenas, and Boulton Juxta Rhenas!

By the 1800s, however, it was generally known as Bolton, Bolton by the Sands, or Bolton-le-Sands; it was only towards the end of the nineteenth century that the name finally became settled!

The importance of the sands is also highlighted in the motto on the parish coat of arms; “Per Arena Per Agros”, meaning “By our sands and our fields”. Historically, the sands provided two practical applications – fishing and travel.

Cockle fishing has had such importance in the area that the parish coat of arms includes two cockle shells, and once upon a time the village was even nicknamed “Cockletown”. Many families were involved in cockling, with even the youngest children being taken out onto the sands; in 1867 the vicar of Bolton-le-Sands complained that this meant the children were missing out on their education entirely.

The creation of the Lancaster Canal, the first stretch of which opened in 1797, made it much easier for the fishermen to send their catches for sale in Preston, and brought affordable coal in so that householders no longer had to burn peat. Later, the railway would bring another boom; the village even had its own station then, although this is long gone today! These booms, however, led to overfishing which led to a reduction in catches, and today cockle fishing is strictly restricted by permits.

Travel across the sands is also largely restricted today, to organised cross-bay walks, but once upon a time it was much more frequent. Cutting across the bay from Bolton-le-Sands or nearby Hest Bank meant you could avoid the rough roads and, later on, tolls on the turnpike road going around the bay.

It was not an easy trip, however; quicksands, shifting river channels and fast tides that a man couldn’t outrun (risks that all still exist today) meant it was always dangerous. In the Middle Ages, a chantry was said to have stood on St Nicholas Lane, so that travellers could pray before the trip, or give thanks at the end of it. To help travellers make the crossing safely, the position of Guide to the Sands was officially created in 1548; these guides would test the route and guide travellers across. The role still exists, and the Queen’s Guide to the Sands today is the highly experienced Cedric Robinson, who has held the role since 1963.

Of course, the most notable features any visitor looks for in a picturesque village are the churches and the pubs! The first evidence of the parish church dates back to 1094, although it probably stood some time before that. Within the baptistry of the Parish Church, there’s part of a pre-Norman celtic cross, which may have been part of an earlier establishment.

Anyone can build a house, but it takes more than a physical structure to make a home. Creating a home requires an emotional attachment to your abode. The thought of it should evoke a sense of joy, calmness and serenity. Your home should remind you of quality time with those you love, allow you to relax in harmony and represent your personal interests and style.

When designing a room, remember to stay true to the feelings you want to evoke. Play with colours and textures to create a mood or theme for your space. Keeping this mood in mind throughout the design process will help turn an everyday space into a topic of conversation.

Find out what it is that makes YOU happy. Maybe you have fond adolescent memories of family holidays to the coast and spa blues with silk textures help you almost feel the salt in the air. Or perhaps you loved the days spent at your grandmother’s home and an art deco wall clock preserves a piece of your history. Bringing a personal connection to life through a theme or statement piece injects joy and wonder to your daily living.

To enhance the conversation-evoking qualities of a room, factor in the unexpected. Select a focal point, such as metallic throw pillows or a chandelier made from recycled bottles to catch one’s eye as they walk in. Think outside the box with colours. Play with bright hues such as lime green for a cheerful space or mix in blacks for a more dramatic feel.

Once you’ve found your inspiration do a lighting test to make sure your ideas work in the actual space. Pay particularly close attention to the natural lighting as it is one of the most important design elements. If the lighting washes out a statement colour or a metallic accent creates a blinding glare, it’s best to go a different route. The natural sunshine coming in should cause a sense of serenity.

As you go through the design process remember to listen to your heart to select the themes and elements that speak to you and your family.

Not only will your home provide a sense of balance, but will make an authentic statement about who you are and will bring you bliss every time you open the front door.

And of course, family is truly what makes a home.

You’re looking forward to settling in for the night, but as you reach for the remote control, you trip over the bulky coffee table and find yourself face to face with the rug! If only you had more space in that tiny living room… Guess what? You’re not alone.

Even inhabitants of roomier living spaces often lament that they don’t have a larger area for entertaining, lounging or visiting with family.

The bottom line: unless a remodel is in the budget, we must appreciate the space we have. And there’s no better way to do this than by making some strategic design choices!

City dwellers often crave more space, but the second-best thing is space-saving, flexible furniture. Now manufacturers are finding new ways to shrink, fold and collapse furniture, and many also offer expert advice.

Keep the floor space as clear as possible. Make the walls work hard. Consider fold-down gate-leg tables and extending or wall-hung tables.

Choose beds with built-in storage and sofa beds that fold away. Side tables, coffee tables or stools with lift-up tops provide extra seating and storage.”

Choose furniture that is adaptable and flexible to meet the challenge. Coffee tables that lift to become dining tables, a “smart bed” can store sports equipment, TV units can offer storage and a footstool can open into a bed.

As for decor, you can use visual tricks to create an illusion of space. Where natural light hits a room, paint that surface white, glossy surfaces can bounce the light around.

Light & Space paint reflects twice as much light as ordinary emulsion, and glass-topped tables can increase the effect. Using the same floor coverings can link rooms together.

When Mother Teresa received the Nobel Prize, she was asked, “What can we do to promote world peace?” She answered “Go home and love your family.”

Babies are lovely to hug
Kids, particularly small ones, are just so cute to hug.

It makes kids smarter
Research shows that children whose parents demonstrate love to them verses children whose parents don’t, actually have bigger brains Hugging may not raise their IQ, but it’ll help them get the most out of it. And that will be good for them, their future family, and the spheres in which they will move as adults.

It releases good chemicals
Physical contact releases a certain chemical in the brain that promotes happiness and lower stress hormones. Cuddling and hugging can literally put you in a better mood. If you’ve had a tough day, or if your kids are pushing the envelope and you to your limit, a good way to stop and reset the home atmosphere is to cuddle.

It communicates love
It is one way – out of many – that confirms your love for them.

It establishes a connection
A good way to reconnect with the kids is through a big hug. It says, “I’ll slow down and just be with you.”

At the end of a long day, a good ‘schnuggle’ before bedtime says, “I am here for you.”

Kids need it
Everyone, but particularly younger children, need to be cuddled. They need physical touch. They need comfort. They need a safe place close to their real life heroes when they feel scared or nervous.

Have a look here for the right bed for your family cuddles any time of the day or night!

Say goodbye to beige. The new look for 2017 will be pure drama with deep jewel colours with mixed patterns and texture, texture, texture such as pleating and folding of velvets and cottons.

So let’s see what’s trending this year.

WHAT’S IN

1. Terracotta

Warm materials such as terracotta tiles will replace currently popular cool and white tones.

Unlike in the 80s, they aren’t used as border tiles. Instead they will have a natural matte finish and be used as feature walls in bathrooms or for cladding fireplaces.

2. Cork

You heard it here first – cork is making a comeback.

Not only is cork a stylish material idea that adds warmth and texture to spaces, it’s also ideal for absorbing noise in our increasingly large, open plan homes.

Cork could be used to clad entire walls in the home office and used to pin notes to.”

3. Green

Dark shades of green will become the new must-have dark interior colour as we say goodbye to navy and midnight blues.

Used in a feature armchair or cushions and decor items as an accent, it adds depth and can bring in the colours from the outdoors.

4. Upholstered bedheads

Beds will change dramatically in 2017, with upholstered bed heads set to replace the timber bed frames currently dominating the market.

Whether you opt for the classic model in neutral colour with buttons, or a plush one in velvet, a bedhead is an easy way to update and add instant glamour to a bedroom.

5. Escapism

Homes with nooks and places to retrieve will become more popular as humans react to our increasingly technological lives.

With an ever-increasing amount of time spent in front of a computer or smartphone screen during the day…there will be a greater desire to create spaces in our lives devoid of digital distraction,

Relaxed furniture and materials will follow suit, from deep sofas with linen slip covers, to oversized love seats, day beds, Icelandic sheepskins, chunky knit wool rugs and floor cushions.

6. Jewel tones

While pastel shades of pink and blue are currently having their day in the sun, they will soon be overtaken by jewel tones inspired by metals, space, stars, clouds and the cosmos.

Transparent fabrics, floaty silks and sheers will create a lightness and soft romantic element to this trend, which embodies an optimism for where we have come from and where we are headed.
