Tips for choosing soft furnishing and fabrics to bring some personality to your room.
Step 1: Start with a fabric you love and then worry about what to do with it. Whatever you choose, this will form the basis of your colour palette for the room and gives you something to build on.
Step 2: Use pattern to pick up colours. Patterned fabrics are great for dressing up a room and giving it a fresh look.
Step 3: Texture is important when building a room because it adds homely ‘layers’ and movement. It’s also an interesting way to keep the colour palette flowing throughout, without making it too uniform.
Step 4: Take a step back. You don’t want to walk into a room and feel like your head might explode because there’s too much going on. A successful room needs to have balance. Too much of one colour, pattern or texture and a room can look busy.
Experiment and have fun! You can always change it back again.

Cumbrian bed company teams up with Age UK and Eden Flood Volunteers to help those affected by floods in the region
Cumbrian bed manufacturer, Sealy UK is spearheading a campaign to support residents affected by the devastation of the region’s recent flooding – teaming up with local organisations, Age UK and Eden Flood Volunteers.
Following its involvement with the immediate relief efforts when flooding hit the region back in December 2015 providing much-needed supplies, Sealy is now helping residents as they prepare to return to their homes.
The company has made a donation of bed frames and mattresses, worth up to £40,000*, to the two organisations, which will each allocate the items to residents in the community who desperately need them. Sealy is also urging other local businesses and furniture manufacturers to follow suit and pledge their support to those affected in the region.
Neil Robinson, Sealy’s Sales and Marketing Director, said: “We’re a Cumbrian company, based in Aspatria and the flooding appeal is very close to our hearts. Many Sealy colleagues and their friends and family members have been directly affected by the terrible weather conditions we experienced not only in December last year, but on several subsequent occasions, the results of which have been absolutely devastating each time.
“We’ve supported the efforts in any way we can, with a donation to the community foundation, providing supplies and catering for rescue teams and now, teaming up with Age UK and Eden Flood Volunteers, to help residents return to homes. These organisations help those in need in the community every single day and we’re incredibly pleased to be able to support them with their efforts.
“We are aware how many others have been playing their part when it comes to this important cause, and we would absolutely love to see businesses in our community continuing the great work to help those affected to get their houses back in order.”
Joan Bailey, Information and Advice Supervisor at Age UK Carlisle, said: “During our work with the community we’ve experienced first-hand some of the damage caused by December’s floods. It is incredibly disruptive, especially to elderly residents who may spend a lot of time in their homes and rely on the support of others to get these homes repaired.
“The flooding didn’t only impact on the ground floor of the houses affected, but the resulting damp has damaged rooms and furniture on the higher levels too; the mattresses will therefore be absolutely vital. We’d like to thank Sealy for its kind donation from us here at Age UK and the community members these items will go to.”
Alan Bennett at Eden Flood Volunteers, said: “We are extremely grateful for Sealy’s generous offer of support during what has been a very difficult time for the community. It’s fantastic to see a local organisation really caring about the residents in the region and the mattresses will go a long way to helping people return to their homes.”
*Total donation value from Sealy UK will be a maximum of £40,000 (RRP), though may be less, depending on the value of specific mattresses and bases selected by recipients.
Cumbrian-based bed manufacturer, Sealy UK is underlining its commitment to the local community, by sponsoring a fundraising event at Blennerhasset Primary School in Wigton, held in conjunction with children’s enterprise organisation, ‘U Can Shine.’
Taking place on Friday 12th February, the fun-filled day saw local businesses, including four teams from Sealy, joining pupils to take part in an exciting Scalextric Race Day at the school.
In total more than £900 was raised, with funds going towards repairing the damage caused to the school by the recent floods, as well as contributing towards future U Can Shine enterprise activities.
The charity event was organised by Key Stage Two pupils, aged 7 – 11, and forms part of U Can Shine’s ongoing enterprise programme with the school, where it helps raise students’ aspirations and develop their life skills through practical projects, working with local businesses.
Sealy’s involvement came about after students Ben Parker and Kyle Fell pitched a request for sponsorship to the bed manufacturer’s HR Manager, Claire McGregor and Site Director, Mike Thompson, who were extremely impressed with what she heard.
Claire said: “Ben and Kyle gave us an excellent presentation outlining why we should get involved in the event, and it was so good, we just couldn’t say no. As such we are extremely proud to have sponsored this fun-filled event, and in turn, help give something back to the community in which we operate. Feedback from our staff has been great, with all of them having a great day.”
Shaun Weatherhead, spokesperson for ‘U Can Shine’ said: “Our enterprise programmes with schools teach children the importance of a good work ethic and give them the opportunity to work with local businesses through engaging and fun activities. It was a big coup for them to secure involvement from Sealy UK, and the children’s hard work has most certainly paid off”.
With more than 300 employees from the local area, Sealy UK constantly strives to support the local community, and this sponsorship forms part of a broader commitment towards charitable work.

This month has signal the start of our annual awareness event, National Bed Month (March) – the month dedicated to improving a good night’s kip with a comfortable, supportive bed.
As a good night’s sleep can’t always be guaranteed, it is up to you to regularly assess sleep quality and comfort levels. It may, or may not, seem obvious but the best place to start when working towards a better night’s sleep is your bed.
Did you know for instance that when replacing an uncomfortable bed with a new one we get nearly an hour’s extra sleep? Now who doesn’t want that?
A bed with the correct support, comfort and space will ensure you wake less, move about less, are less disturbed by your partner and are less likely to wake up feeling tired or aching. Remember, if you’re not comfortable in bed your sleep won’t be as deep.
Here’s are top five tips for buying a new bed:
1. Spend as much as you can afford – you get what you pay for – both in product and service. Plus it’s probably one of the most important investments you’ll make, not just for your home but also for your own wellbeing! Remember, every £100 you spend represents less than 4p a night over seven years.
2. Spend time trying out the mattress – ideally at least 10 minutes – to find the one that is most comfortable for you and your partner. Wear comfortable clothing, remove any outdoor gear and adopt your normal sleeping position.
3. Don’t forget a bed is a mattress and a base working together – don’t consider them in isolation.
4. Look for the NBF Approved ‘Big Tick’ label to be reassured that the mattress you’re buying is safe, clean and honest.
5. Think big – larger beds are more comfortable. Being disturbed by a sleeping partner is one of the most common complaints. With a larger bed you are less likely to disturb one another.
Do you know what sleep thieves are? Think light, temperature, comfort and distractions. Banish your smartphone/iPad from your bedroom!
Sleep is the mysterious shift in consciousness that our bodies require every day. It’s vital for our health and wellbeing, and not only do we function less well when we don’t get enough quality sleep, but it can lead to long-term health problems. That’s why we need to do all that we can to ensure that we enjoy quality sleep and deal with any sleep problems.
To ensure you experience good sleep it’s essential to follow good lifestyle habits and to eliminate the factors that are causing you disturbed sleep. For example making sure that your bedroom is the right environment, looking at the lighting in your home, and avoiding foods and drinks that can hinder sleep.
