Back in 1957 MJ Bird & Son was launched with a simple mission: to celebrate great furniture and sell it at a great price.

Six decades later, and after several generations of the Bird family, we’re still here and still a favourite for people looking for leading furniture and carpet brands, style, quality and value.

For us it’s quite simply all about family and home.

Throughout 2017, we’ll be celebrating in lots of exciting ways – competitions, special discounts and plenty of fun on our website and via social media.

You’re looking forward to settling in for the night, but as you reach for the remote control, you trip over the bulky coffee table and find yourself face to face with the rug! If only you had more space in that tiny living room… Guess what? You’re not alone.

Even inhabitants of roomier living spaces often lament that they don’t have a larger area for entertaining, lounging or visiting with family.

The bottom line: unless a remodel is in the budget, we must appreciate the space we have. And there’s no better way to do this than by making some strategic design choices!

City dwellers often crave more space, but the second-best thing is space-saving, flexible furniture. Now manufacturers are finding new ways to shrink, fold and collapse furniture, and many also offer expert advice.

Keep the floor space as clear as possible. Make the walls work hard. Consider fold-down gate-leg tables and extending or wall-hung tables.

Choose beds with built-in storage and sofa beds that fold away. Side tables, coffee tables or stools with lift-up tops provide extra seating and storage.”

Choose furniture that is adaptable and flexible to meet the challenge. Coffee tables that lift to become dining tables, a “smart bed” can store sports equipment, TV units can offer storage and a footstool can open into a bed.

As for decor, you can use visual tricks to create an illusion of space. Where natural light hits a room, paint that surface white, glossy surfaces can bounce the light around.

Light & Space paint reflects twice as much light as ordinary emulsion, and glass-topped tables can increase the effect. Using the same floor coverings can link rooms together.

Say goodbye to beige. The new look for 2017 will be pure drama with deep jewel colours with mixed patterns and texture, texture, texture such as pleating and folding of velvets and cottons.

So let’s see what’s trending this year.

WHAT’S IN

1. Terracotta

Warm materials such as terracotta tiles will replace currently popular cool and white tones.

Unlike in the 80s, they aren’t used as border tiles. Instead they will have a natural matte finish and be used as feature walls in bathrooms or for cladding fireplaces.

2. Cork

You heard it here first – cork is making a comeback.

Not only is cork a stylish material idea that adds warmth and texture to spaces, it’s also ideal for absorbing noise in our increasingly large, open plan homes.

Cork could be used to clad entire walls in the home office and used to pin notes to.”

3. Green

Dark shades of green will become the new must-have dark interior colour as we say goodbye to navy and midnight blues.

Used in a feature armchair or cushions and decor items as an accent, it adds depth and can bring in the colours from the outdoors.

4. Upholstered bedheads

Beds will change dramatically in 2017, with upholstered bed heads set to replace the timber bed frames currently dominating the market.

Whether you opt for the classic model in neutral colour with buttons, or a plush one in velvet, a bedhead is an easy way to update and add instant glamour to a bedroom.

5. Escapism

Homes with nooks and places to retrieve will become more popular as humans react to our increasingly technological lives.

With an ever-increasing amount of time spent in front of a computer or smartphone screen during the day…there will be a greater desire to create spaces in our lives devoid of digital distraction,

Relaxed furniture and materials will follow suit, from deep sofas with linen slip covers, to oversized love seats, day beds, Icelandic sheepskins, chunky knit wool rugs and floor cushions.

6. Jewel tones

While pastel shades of pink and blue are currently having their day in the sun, they will soon be overtaken by jewel tones inspired by metals, space, stars, clouds and the cosmos.

Transparent fabrics, floaty silks and sheers will create a lightness and soft romantic element to this trend, which embodies an optimism for where we have come from and where we are headed.

Christmas is a feeling, more than anything. It is a unique but humanly universal feeling, of childhood memories and joy, of people we love or loved, of places we belonged.

It’s the time to be with family and friends so make sure you get your home looking perfect just in time for Christmas.

Do you need a bigger dining room table and chairs…Just in time for Christmas?
Do you need a new sofa or three piece suite…Just in time for Christmas?
Do you need a new bed or bedroom suite…Just in time for Christmas?
Do you need a few Christmassy accessories for a bit of HO HO HO?

Whilst you take care of the big stuff here are some brilliant and easy ways to make your house full of festive cheer!

That Christmas smell!

Add cinnamon sticks, pine needles, mandarin oranges, cloves and whatever else smells like home and Christmas to you and simmer in a pan of water until your house smells like delicious, Christmassy goodness.

Sparkly footprints!

Presumably you have an elf on the shelf, you’ve chewed some of Rudolph’s carrot for the edge of realism and quite happily drank down Santa’s sherry. So how else can you authenticate the big man in a red suit? How about powdering glitter and icing sugar around a pair of boots near the fireplace so it looks like Santa has just stepped out of your fireplace? It’ll go down a storm with the kids.

Vases full of festive cheer!

Have some spare vases around the house? Instead of filling them with flowers, with not fill them with candy canes, gingerbread and chocolate coins for everyone to snack on.

Table decorations!

Pop some baubles into upside down wine glasses with tea light candles on top to add quick and easy Christmas flair to your table setting.

Outdoorsy fun!

Since those flower pots have been rendered useless in the cold weather, why not pop one one either side of your door, then fill it with spare pine branches, pine cones and a few baubles?

Tasty treats!

Homemade mulled wine and cider will not only go down a treat with your family, it’ll also make your house smell divine, and will probably have your neighbours casually dropping by for a chat and to drink up your reserves. Fortunately it’s extremely easy to make, and Rekorderlig winter cider has to be the best booze for the job!

The best way of spreading Christmas cheer!

Everyone is allowed to have excruciating taste in tunes over the festive period, and so as long as there is something about ‘Santa’, ‘Jingle Bells’ or ‘Merry’, in the lyrics it should be instantly approved. With that in mind, why not try Now That’s What I Call Christmas, or Michael Buble’s Christmas.

Sleep used to be for wimps – now, it’s become the ultimate status symbol. As evidence grows that a good night’s rest is essential for health, happiness and success, we’ve become a nation obsessed with the quantity and quality of our slumber.

Sales of mattresses and beds rose by 4.5 per cent last year, according to the International Sleep Products Association. We’re investing more time – and money – than ever on luxurious bedding and calming bedroom furniture and lighting, in a bid for optimal comfort.

The tech industry has woken up to the sleep boom, too, with hundreds of apps and wearable monitors to monitor our sleep cycles now available. The latest incarnations are smart pillows, such as the Zeeq, launched on Kickstarter this summer, which tracks your movements during the night, vibrates to nudge you if you’re snoring, and has speakers inside so you can fall asleep to your favourite, relaxing music. Increasing numbers of companies are installing ‘nap pods’ to allow employees to grab a snooze when their creativity is ebbing.

The trend has no doubt been helped by leading business figures such as Arianna Huffington championing the need for more, better sleep – in her recent book, The Sleep Revolution, she described how transforming her habits to ensure she got eight hours a night made her “a better leader”.

In today’s wellness-obsessed culture, cavalier, macho attitudes to sleep seem out-of-date: Donald Trump’s erratic behaviour has been linked by some to the fact he reportedly gets by on four hours a night.

We sell hundreds of mattresses every year and there’s nothing better than coming into a shop and talking to one of our very experienced staff who will offer impartial advice advice across all our ranges. Our staff are specially trained to help people choose what’s best for them. Being able to get everything for a bedroom under one roof is our strength.”

Worries over Brexit are keeping many awake at night, according to new research from Sealy UK. The study, which questioned 1000 people from across the country, was commissioned following Brexit, and reveals that 21% have since experienced disturbed sleep as a result of worries over job security, fears over economic uncertainty (19%) and the threat of impending recession (14%).

Meanwhile, July’s above-average temperatures also wrecked havoc on sleep quality, with more than half of people (62%) struggling to sleep as a result of the recent heatwave.

In response, Sealy has launched the largest worldwide sleep study in history, to help it comprehensively understand the impact major events can play on our sleep quality, as well to benchmark how well we are sleeping as a nation in comparison to the rest of the world.

Run in conjunction with Loughborough University’s Clinical Sleep Research Unit, participants in Australia, South Africa, China and South Korea are already involved. Sealy is now calling for Brits to head online and have their say.

Neil Robinson, sales and marketing director at Sealy, says: “We’re very excited to be conducting the census in association with Loughborough University’s Clinical Sleep Research Unit and our partners across the globe. Sleep is clearly an issue for many following the stresses caused by Brexit, and as such, the study will provide invaluable insights into sleep which will inform both our product development and the work of the Clinical Sleep Research Unit.

“This forms an important part of Sealy’s ongoing commitment to research and innovation in the sleep arena and it’s fantastic to be the country driving the study forward. We hope people across the UK will take the time out to complete the study for us.”

Professor Kevin Morgan from the Clinical Sleep Research Unit at Loughborough University adds: “Our mission here at the CSRU is to improve the understanding of evidence-based management of insomnia and chronic sleep disturbance through applied research, knowledge transfer and professional training. The Sealy Sleep Census fits perfectly within this. We’re pleased to be involved with the study and we’re looking forward to seeing the results, and identifying trends across the globe. This is certainly a groundbreaking project.”

The study takes around 10 to 15 minutes to complete and can be found here.
